White spathes rising through a canopy of glossy green.
What appears to be the flower of a Peace Lily is actually a modified leaf known as a spathe. The tiny true flowers are carried along the central spadix.
Its familiar white form has also shaped its name: the spathe resembles a white flag, giving rise to the association with peace. Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, Peace Lilies naturally grow beneath forest canopies, which explains their preference for filtered light and humidity.
Care
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal for strong growth and flowering.
- Shade: Can survive in lower light, but flowering will be reduced.
- Water: Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried. Keep the root zone moist but never waterlogged.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity.
- Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around normal indoor temperatures. Avoid cold draughts and heat sources.
- Water quality: Filtered or rainwater can help prevent leaf damage associated with fluoride in some tap water.
- Feeding: Apply a general liquid fertiliser every few weeks during active growth.
- Pruning: Remove spent flower stems and yellowing leaves at their base.
- Warning: Drooping leaves can indicate a need for water, but persistent wet soil can lead to root rot.
Pet safety: โ ๏ธ Toxic to dogs and cats. ASPCA identifies insoluble calcium oxalates as the toxic principle.
