Large, architectural leaves with a natural affinity for shade.
Fatsia japonica is native to Japan, Korea and Taiwan and is recognised for its large, hand-shaped evergreen leaves. Variegated forms introduce areas of white, cream or yellow across the foliage, making each leaf almost graphic in character.
Unlike many plants chosen for bright windows, Fatsia is naturally suited to partial and deeper shade. Its scale and strong leaf structure allow it to function almost like a piece of living architecture.
Care
- Light: Best in bright filtered light or partial shade. Variegated forms need sufficient light to maintain their markings.
- Direct sun: Can tolerate some sun when adequately watered, but strong exposure can scorch foliage.
- Water: Keep the soil moderately moist but well drained. Container plants require more frequent watering during spring and summer.
- Drainage: Avoid permanently wet soil.
- Humidity: Normal indoor humidity is generally adequate, although good ventilation is important.
- Temperature: Performs well in cool indoor conditions; protect from severe cold and frost.
- Feeding: Feed regularly during active growth, particularly when grown in containers.
- Position: Avoid strong winds, which can tear the large leaves.
